In this article, we will try to explain what is SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) and how it is different from SAP Cloud Platform.
Note: It is advisable to know the difference between about private and public cloud to understand HANA Enterprise Cloud more clearly. Please refer to the article Difference between Private and Public Cloud.
What is SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC)?
SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud is a private cloud offering by SAP. It allows customers and partners to deploy HANA application, SAP ERP, CRM, SAP BW etc. in their private cloud, which is fully managed and supported by SAP. SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud also supports custom HANA applications, including non-SAP centric ones.
SAP makes the HANA Enterprise Cloud available via data centers worldwide. HEC managed services include backups, patching, provisioning and upgrades, restore and recovery, infrastructure monitoring and event detection-all in a private cloud environment.
Customers can bring their own (already licensed) SAP applications into HEC or tap into subscription-based pricing on SAP software.
Difference between HEC and a traditional hosting provider?
The primary characteristic of HEC is that it is a complete managed
service by which SAP provides the infrastructure as well as the
deployment and management of the applications.
In addition, customers benefit from SAP's deep expertise in SAP technologies and HANA. The data centers are run entirely by SAP team. Other benefits, include a reduction in IT management costs and the ability for customers to offload system upgrades to SAP.
How does the SAP Cloud Platform fit in to SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud?
SAP Cloud platform is a Platform-as-a-Service offered by SAP for
customers and partners to develop and deliver cloud applications, extensions
and solutions. SAP Cloud Platform is the PaaS layer of the HANA Enterprise
Cloud solution. This enables customers and partners to extend functionality of
their applications hosted in the HANA Enterprise Cloud and also build new
applications. In this case applications built on SAP Cloud Platform are
essentially running on SAP Hana Enterprise Cloud.
HEC is an intermediate solution: It gives customer a Low-Risk
Deployment Option
For both business and IT executives, choosing the right deployment is
all about risk reduction and cost avoidance, and HEC enables customers to
avoid 'all or nothing' decisions. With HEC, the customer
could avoid both the capital cost and its resulting depreciation expense. This
enables the financial risk to be avoided.
SAP Cloud Solutions - Difference between HEC, SAP Cloud Platform and
S/4HANA Cloud
Apart from HANA Enterprise Cloud and SAP Cloud Platform, SAP also
provides multiple cloud products as Software-as-a-Service.
For example, SAP S/4HANA Cloud Edition, SAP Concur cloud edition, SAP Success-Factors
cloud edition etc.
SAP S/4HANA Cloud edition:
SAP S/4 HANA Cloud edition is Software as a Service (SaaS) that lives on
SAP's servers and is maintained by SAP, with innovations applied quarterly.
S/4HANA is fully built on the in-memory SAP HANA Platform.
SAP S/4HANA Cloud supports the most important
business scenarios you need to run your company, from finance to procurement to
manufacturing and supply chain. Functionality offered includes finance,
accounting, controlling, procurement, sales, manufacturing, plant maintenance,
project system, and product lifecycle management, plus integration with
